Upcycle and recycle the materials you already have

You don’t need to go out and spend a ton to get these Halloween crafts for kids rolling - an easy source of craft materials can be found right in your kitchen! Check your recycling bin for various kinds of cardboard, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, glassware and more. This can be a great way to start a project or use as scrap to practice before moving onto the real deal.

Make sure to carefully clean anything that used to contain food or liquids. Thoroughly prep delicate materials and sand down any sharp edges before letting kids handle these recycled craft materials.

Our tool recommendations

There are a few tools every crafter needs in their toolbox - from the basic, like a good pair of tweezers, to the more specialized, like pin vises. Here are a few essentials we recommend to help you get crafting the right way:

Upcycled Halloween Trick or Treat Bag

These days, it seems like we have more reusable bags than we know what to do with! Make a dent in your collection and easily transform any under utilized bags into a one-of-a-kind Trick or Treat bag this Halloween.

Plain, single color bags work best for this project but if yours have designs you can’t remove, we recommend using paper or even old pillowcases to create a new work surface. This is the perfect project for all ages and even the littlest ones in your family can join in on the fun, all you really need is a little glue and imagination!

Decorate your bag with fabric paint or markers, adding spooky details like bats with fangs and glowing eyes, pumpkins with laughing faces, ghosts with wispy bodies. Add fun textures and colors by adding pom poms, yarn, rhinestones, glitter and more; this is where you can really let your creative mind shine!

For the adults, make sure you’re using a strong adhesive to ensure that nothing from your bags fall off during the festivities. Your kiddos will be thrilled to carry this unique and sustainable Trick or Treat Bag on their Halloween adventures!

Recycled Halloween Candy Jars

Transform a glass jar into a festive and versatile candy jar, perfect for Halloween! Start by cleaning and drying your glass jars thoroughly. Then, plan out your preferred design - do you want Frankenstein’s iconic visage or Dracula’s fanged smile? You can even go for more classic designs like a ghost or mummy! Once you’ve decided, you can paint the outside with an appropriate glass paint - be sure to let it dry completely before moving onto the following steps.

Now, grab a trusty pair of scissors and cut out pieces of felt or paper to create the larger details: big spooky eyes, grinning mouths, furrowed eyebrows, and any other features you desire. Finally, use a strong adhesive to carefully glue the felt pieces onto the jar. For any smaller details, use paint markers and carefully draw on your design.

When everything is thoroughly set and dried, fill your new Halloween jar with your favorite sweets and enjoy the monstrously delicious fun! If you prefer your project as decor, add LED lights, a tea light or votive to create the perfect piece of spooky decor.

Spooky Ghost Window Garland

Nothing says Halloween like a classic ghost in the window! This adorable decoration is perfect for both indoor and outdoor use, and can be customized to fit any space.

Start by finding scrap fabric like old pillowcases, blankets and curtains to get a white sheet around 2’-3’ long. Cut out several squares from your fabric; you can make them all the same size or mix it up for a more whimsical look. Using a tool like a rotary cutter makes this repetitive job easy; its sharp blades can cleanly cut through several layers of fabric at the same time. However, a pair of scissors can always get the job done!

Tip: If you prefer to keep your decor indoors, make this garland out of paper! You can adhere all your ghosts to the window directly or string them along to give it some movement.

Find the center of all your squares and use an awl or scribe tool to create two holes on either side of that point. This is where you will string your ghosts together to make a garland. The inch of space below that center point is where you can draw your ghosts’ faces - get creative with it! Whether your little ones want to go for silly or scary, the choices are endless.

Now you can assemble the garland. String either ribbon or decorative twine through the two prepared holes and slide your ghosts down into your desired positions. Space them out evenly or stagger them in a more haphazard way to get into that scary mood. You can safely hang this garland in your windows or add lights to give your ghost friends an eerie glowing effect.

Simple Halloween Crafts Paper Towel Rolls

If you’re looking for quick and easy craft for any sugar-hyped kiddos, this one is sure to be a hit! All you need is some paper towel or toilet paper tubes, paint, glue and (for the best effect) googly eyes. Start by cutting the rolls down to different sizes and heights for all the different characters you want to create.

Now, paint to your rolls their base colors (i.e. green for Frankenstein, black for bats or cats, white for ghosts and mummies, orange for Jack O’Lanterns and grey for vampires!) and let them dry completely for decorating. We recommend doing this a day ahead to cut down on the mess.

Using a paper cutter like our best selling K26 Fit Grip Knife, cut out the details and features you want to add to your roll. Finally, glue down all the features and let them dry completely. You can keep these decorations as standees or even add them to string lights to create a fun and spooky line!

Halloween Flying Bats Door Decals

Signal the start of Halloween by adding these eerie little guys to your door. These bats might be small but they pack a decorating punch! We provided a handy stencil for your bat decals in various sizes to give your project more texture and dimension.

For this project, you’ll need a few plastic craft sheets in black (less than 5mm) and optionally, a blowdryer. Use a tracing wheel to transfer the stencil design onto your sheets and use scissors or a craft knife to cut out your decals. Make sure to lightly sand down any sharp edges before letting any younger friends help out.

Tip: A cutting mat is a must have for any crafter! With its ability to ‘heal’ itself by absorbing most of the pressure from sharp blades, cutting mats make the perfect work surface. These mats can help contain the inevitable mess to one area and protect table tops and floors from the hands of enthusiastic artists!

To make it seem like your bats are just about to fly off of your door and into the night, use an embossing tool with a ball tip to score where the body of the bat and their wings meet. This is where a blowdryer can come in handy; with a little bit of time and heat, you can gently shape your bats into the correct position.

Since these bats are made of plastic, it’s safe to leave them outside to brave rain or shine! You can opt for heavy duty double sided tape or velcro to keep outdoor decor attached or add them to your windows inside or out for easy upkeep and clean up.
